Mission of the Institute

(...) Humanities education is the key element of general education – the college not only intends to keep a broad offer of humanistic courses of study, but also to develop its mission in the town and in the region, which in its essence is a humanist mission. A human and his goodness are the crucial elements of this mission. Therefore, a comprehensive development of students and teachers within the academic community, cooperation with the local entrepreneurs or local-government and social activists, as well as working for the common benefit of the region’s inhabitants are the subject of special interest of the college, since they influence the development of a widely understood culture of the region. This cultural role fits closely in the activity of the town and the whole voivodeship.

It is worth to take a look at this role from the perspective of the mission of the Institute for Humanities, which was formed as a quite unique phenomenon, first of all owing to the people who created it and who are still shaping it. As the Rector, Prof. Grzegorz Przebinda, expressed in one of his speeches, humanities constitute one of the two lungs of the college, alongside the engineering studies. The main objectives of the Institute include cultivating the beauty of the native language and its culture, an illustrious expression of which has been given by the Polish philology for many years, drawing from the spirit of Prof. Pigoń, as well as bringing closer and domesticating foreignness, to which the German, Russian and English philologists, as well as the Polish philologists are fully dedicated. At the same time, it is also worth emphasising the integrating role of the college in building a community of children, adolescents, their parents, students, and teachers around the value of education. The Institute traditionally provides young students with the skills necessary in the teaching profession, whilst remaining mindful of the difficulties which are related to this, especially in the declining labour market.
